Pressure die casting to metal parts is the same as injection molding to plastic parts, the casting mold is made from custom tool steel and the casting material is metal ingots. During processing, the metal Ingots melt into metal liquid under high heat and casting into the mold as flow, after series of cooling process, the melten metal get cured and formed in to products.
Die casting part main material options are aluminum alloy, copper alloy, magnesium alloy and zink alloy; Product wall thickness requires around 2-8 mm and the thickness difference on the same part should be less than 3mm. Normally tolerance for Aluminum alloy and Magnesiun alloy is CT5-7, for Zink alloy CT4-6 and for copper alloy is CT6-8.
As for material options for pressure die casting, no matter in low volume production or high volume production, low pressure or high pressure die casting, the materials mainly are aluminum alloy, copper alloy , magnesium alloy and zink alloy. Roughness is different when material is different and when the casting mold used time is long; Normally Aluminum alloy is around Ra 3.2-6.3, Zink alloy is around Ra 1.2-3.6, but Cooper alloy product most of the time have some crack marks.
As for Surface finish treatments for die casting, depend on the material different have different options like beadblasting, sanding , polished, plating, anodize, painting and powder coating.
In pressure die casting process, the tolerance of Aluminum alloy and Magnesiun alloy is CT5-7, Zink alloy is CT4-6 and copper alloy is CT6-8. Though the tolerance of die casting is not able to compare with the CNC machinining parts, it is the most cost effective way for short run metal productions and volume metal productions especially in large size. Die casting part is fine for the common use fine fit projects, but if the project has the fitting tolerance required, the important assembly position will have a secondly process by CNC machining after die casting.
Aluminum Extrusion die is one of the manufacture process for prototypes, low volume and even big volume productions. This Aluminum extrusion technology is to create a fixed cross-sectional objects by force pushing the heated Aluminum material through a steel die mold of the desired profile and get long pipe in shape, the product is the cutting piece from this pipe by a given length. This process makes it possible to create a work piece in multitude of shapes under complex cross sections.
Different from die casting Aluminum alloy such as ADC12 or A380, Extrusion Aluminum is normally the actual Aluminum alloy from 5000-6000-7000 series, material propeties are the same as the CNC machining Aluminum and finish treatment choices are also the same.
According to different shape, there are three main categories of Aluminum Extrusion Die,
- The Solid Dies, applications are the Aluminum Angles, Channels and heat sinks.
- The Hollow Dies, applications are the Aluminum round tubes, square pipes and complex
cross- sections
- The Semi-hollow dies, applications are the Aluminum Rails, slides and Tracks
Best material options for volume production Aluminum Extrusion parts are Aluminum 6063 and Aluminum5052 considering about the tensile property, but besides, if the extrusion product is not long, AL6061 and AL7075 are the second option because their tensile property is not so good.
And the finish treatment can be all treatment suitible for CNC machining Aluminum materials, whether anodizing, powder coating, e coating or other options.
