How CNC machining fulfills the prototyping and manufacturing requirements?

CNC Machining is a  subtractive  manufacturing process to cut  material from a block and get the solid in shape from the 3D programming, it is one of the important processes for prototyping and low volume production.  It fulfills most of the manufacturing requirement by the fast turn-around, multi-axis, high-speed CNC machining, turning (lathing), milling, grinding and EDM solutions. 


CNC machining  for metal parts enables designer to get a final metal Prototype model directly by machining the 3D concept out of a block of metal material. These metal material options for CNC machining can be Aluminum , Magnesium, Zink, Titanium, Brass, Bronze, Copper, Tool steel and all kinds of stainless steels like AISI, SUS,SS ,17-4PH and so on.

Magnesium CNC machining

 Aluminum alloy and Magnesium alloy are two kinds of soft metal that in low  density but  in high fatigue resistance. Their performance are close to or even superior to high quality steel, and they own the  good plasticity and excellent process-friendly ability in rapid metal machining  prototype and production.


  • Aluminum machining by far is the most cost effective machining metal both in material block cost and CNC machining labor cost. Regular Aluminum Material options are AL5052, AL 6061(-T6), AL6063, AL 6082 and AL7075;  depends on different function and requirements, there are different suggestions for Aluminum.


  • Magnesium machining though cost is more expensive than aluminum,  it is by far the lightest structural metal material for CNC machining, which more than a third lighter by volume than aluminum and half lighter than titanium. Material options normally are AZ31B and AZ91D.

Titanium CNC machining

Zinc Metal and Titanium Metal Machining are also one of the most important metal prototyping processes for CNC machining. They are in higher density and high mechanical property compared to Aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy. They are stronger in strength,  and in  harder and  heavier performance.


  • Zinc Alloy  is mostly  used for die casting; however, in Metal  prototyping and short runs production, Zinc CNC machining by far is a more cost effective way to die-casting  if  thevolume is low.  Zinc Components are applied in heavy industry and common area such as lock cylinder or holding parts. Machining  block Material options are ZAMAK2, ZAMAK3 and ZAMAK5


  •  Titanium is a high tensile strength and high corrosion  resistant metal material,  it is one of the important material for  Marines & Aerospace industrial and defence & space technology. Common Titanium material options for CNC prototyping and productions are pure Titanium , Grade2 Ti and Grade 5 Ti.

Stainless Steel  Cnc Machining

From carbon steel to alloy steel, tool steel to stainless steel, steel is  widely used in industrial production, Mild steel and Stainless steel like AISI, SS, SUS, 17-4H 49alloy and so on, are the most common steel that use for CNC prototype machining and low volume to mass production manufacturing.


  • Mild steel refers to low carbon steel typically the AISI grades 1005 through 1025, is widely used in both prototyping and production area. they are usually used for functional and structural applications. The different carbon contents determinds the different strength and hardness for the products. Mild steel is weld-able that the possible applications for the parts expands .


  • Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains different kinds of good elements for the different good mechanical preformances. CNC machining , lathing and milling is the process methods for stainless steel that in range material from grades 304 (1.4301) thrus 316 (1.4401). This Metal material is in high  hardening rates and poor chip breaking properties during machining, hence the stainless steel machined parts performs  strong and touth in industrial area

 Brass material, bronze material as well as the copper material  is under a very good  thermal conductive and eletrconic conductive property,  they prefroms diffrent under different ratio contents of Cu element.  They are mostly applied for heating components, conductive function components and fitting parts


  • Brass in Muted yellow, somehow similar to gold color but duller, is an alloy material contains 60% copper and 40% Zinc. It is a very wear resisting and  low friction material that use for locks, gears, valve, plumbing and fitting & Tools. 


  • Bronze is a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper and other kinds metals like Aluminum or Tin. It is in good corrosion resistance condictionto salt water and preforms prefect in mechanical property that are mostly used in boat and ship parts and fittings.


  •  Copper despite the competition from Brass and Bronze remains the preferred electrical conductor, which including pure copper and berllium copper.  these metals are applied for electrical devices, machines and engines.

Clear Acrylic (PMMA) Parts machining is an important process for clear parts prototyping and  low volume productions, PMMA CNC machining Process Includes the 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis machining and milling centers, which makes it all possible to cut the block material into shape of the 3D structure.

 

 Clear Acrylic PMMA CNC machining is a high skilled required process. The part appearance, status, tolerance function and finishing acts prefect or not in the final prototype parts depends a lot on the original machining process. Small defeats and operating miss during machining will cause big issues for the final product which can only be found till the end of the high polish, it means all the previous work in put will be wasted and  can only be discovered till the end. 


High polish is starting right after the 2000# sanding process when the part is smooth but foggy, this clear polish process  is under the help of  the polish paste and skills to make the part optical clear as the original material block. 


However, for this process, except the important assembly position, the surface tolerance is hardly to be high precision because there are a lot of hand sanding works to remove material from the part that tolernce will miss from the back and forward polish, so the important tolerance should be marked in 2D .

PC Vapor polish

Polycarbonate (PC) is a  good mechanical properties plastic material, the same as PMMA CNC machining, Clear PC is also processed by  3-axis, 4-axis and even 5-axis CNC machining and milling centers.  the Clear Polycarbonate (PC)  is used for those functional parts in structures and required to be Clear. 


The transparence finish treatment for Polycarbonate (PC) after CNC machined is sanding and Vapor polish process. As PC material is in good strength, PC part sanding is a tough and slow work to use a pieces of sanding paper to remove the spare material from the part. Hence most of the time,  PC parts CNC machining requires programing to make the part with the minimum machining tool to get the CNC mark and CNC lines light for easier the sanding work .  


Vapor polish is the polish finish for PC CNC machining, like hand highly polish for optical PMMA parts, but they are totally two different process. The PC vapor polish is using the steam of methylene chloride to melt and remove the small roughness features and defeats on top of the part surface inside out ,

What kind of prototype parts will use Clear PMMA CNC machining process?


Well, first of all, the application for CNC machining and high optical polishes are automotive lighting prototype products and car lamps prototype products like eyebrow bezel optics parts, wing bezel optics parts, lens filter parts, Lens inner parts, car lamps cover and light guide pipes , these parts are all required to be optical clear polish after CNC machining. and the second, display parts or display windows, show boxes, exhibition parts like mini cars, coffee machine containers, covers, front panels Etc., as long as the requirement is Optical clear prototype, PMMA CNC machining and high polishing is always the first option. 


 there is another situation that the light pipes with the optical area for the light transmits, will need to left the optical area with machined finish only, becasue a  tiny dierection change of the teeth will impact a lot on the light transmits.

ABS parts CNC machining

 Opaque Plastic material including all the machinable block plastic material are mostly color in black ,white and beige. These opaque materials are the most important plastic for CNC prototype machining , in the application of plastic prototypes, plastic product shells, housing, enclosures,frames and mockups. 


The Opaque material options are ABS, PC, ABS PC Blend, PMMA, PP, POM, PA, PA+GF, PEI, PVC, PEEK, PPS, PTFE, Bakelite, PU molding board (renshape), Ceramics and other could-buy opaque plastic materials, as long as the  plastic material is machininable, it is support able from  our CNC machining process.


Among all, ABS plastic is the most common used material in opaque plastic machining, it is the less cost and most easier peeling plastic block . The ABS material allows the spliting & glue bond process, and it is suitable for all kinds of post finish treatments like sanding, polishing painting, plasting and printing.
